Tour day 1: Uros Island – Aamantani

Detailed Itinerary

Tours Day 1: Puno Tour – Uros Island Tour – Amantani Island Tour

Pick up from hotel passengers – Puno at 8 am. Puno – Lake Titicaca: islands of Uros, Amantaní and Taquile

UROS ISLAND – TITICACA LAKE FLOATING ISLAND – PUNO

Puno, They are floating islands made on reeds unique in the world. As we have read, this people built their houses on the lake fleeing from the Incas and other warrior peoples, but here they have explained to us that they were fleeing from the Spanish. Probably the thing started fleeing from the Inca expansion and continued to flee from the colonial expansion- Tours Puno.

We sail among the totora (hemp) through a canal until we reach the floating city of Uros – Puno. There is a small bay formed by small artificial islands built on the reed. How they build the islands in Lake Titicaca Puno – Peru:

In the rainy season, the roots of the cattail come out naturally. They chop them up in their mountains and tow them to town. There they put eucalyptus stakes in each piece of root and connect them with ropes. That forms the basis of the islands. Once joined, they put layers of cattails on top. On this they build the houses, also made of reeds. Generally, on each island of Lake Titicaca – Puno, there is a communal house and a viewpoint (which of course the children went up to). When a couple wants to get married, they have to find an island to live on in Lake Titicaca Puno, or they can build their own. It takes about 1 year to finish it. Tour ISLA AMANTANI PUNO:

The island of Amantaní is made up of 10 communities. We stay in Santa Rosa – Puno. They also have a rotating system between communities to receive tourists on their tours. We started going up towards the town and one of the first houses was ours, Puno. We asked to stay as a family with children, but we only saw a 3 year old. Dionicia and Presento welcomed us, their daughter Julia, husband and son live with them and their other daughter, their son-in-law and their grandson Junior were visiting them. Upon arrival we were shown to our rooms. We went downstairs and the food was ready: quinoa soup, fried cheese with potatoes, and salad. The kitchen is separated from the dining room to a low reed partition. There is a small sofa and a table surrounded by benches covered in typical furs and fabrics. The room is not large and has posters and pictures on the walls. On the table there was a paper with words in Spanish, English and Quechua – Tours Puno.

Carmen spent the entire meal learning Quechua words. It is a very complicated language. Dionicia was very amused and she got along very well with Carmen. Children also learned some words, but their vocabulary is reduced to? Yes? (“ari”) and good morning? (“allin punchay”) – Tours Puno.

Dionicia wastes no time, when she finished giving us the food she started spinning. The altitude makes you feel tired, so after eating we rest for a while. In the library an English lady brought games for children. It was an experience where we really liked it and a good way to unite tourism and development in Puno. After this we went up to Pachatata to see the sunset. Halfway there, Presento showed us his shop and introduced us to his daughter Julia.

Then we continue to climb up, our group on the tour. At an altitude of almost 4000 meters, a one-hour climb is endless and very tiring. Iago’s head hurt a lot from the soroche of the tour. The sunset is beautiful, the colors are very special, they look yellow, red, purple. As soon as the sun goes down the temperature plummets. We had potato and vegetable soup and egg and rice for dinner. All his dishes were very tasty and yes, they are overwhelming. After resting for a while, we did not prepare for the party. Dionicia and Presento lent us typical costumes and helped us dress. The skirt sits just below your chest and tightens well with a band. It took my breath away. Carmen was wearing the same clothes. We went to the party in the same library building. There is a large room, with chairs arranged around it and a single light bulb. We could buy water and beer. We arrived as the first of the tour, and little by little people arrived and the music began (a group of boys from their town played). We all ended up dancing like crazy and the great discovery was Yago, who once the headache passed, he danced the whole party with Francisco without stopping. Carmen also became a friend of her (Cintia) and was dancing with her. At 9:15 am we returned home using our flashlights – Tours Puno.

We sleep in two rooms with two beds each. Carmen and I in a bed and José next to us. Jorge and Yago in the other room. The cattail is used for everything even to put under the mattress. Although the night is very cold and there is no heating, the llama or alpaca blankets warm us and we sleep great. Wednesday, September 19. At 5:30 am it is already light and the rooster began to sing like crazy. We are from the city, the theme of the rooster woke us up. Since we started the trip I think we have not slept anywhere that had blinds, thank goodness that we are used to it and the light does not affect us. We had breakfast with the family, coffee, coca tea, bread with butter and jam and some very good pancakes. One of his tips for soroche is to eat light? but here it is impossible. We said goodbye to the family and Dionicia accompanied us to the port for the return tour- Tours Puno.

Tour ISLA TAQUILE PUNO:

On the boat we went for 1 hour to the island of Taquile on the tour. There the traditions are much more maintained and the people are very different from Amantaní. Both men and women are dressed in the traditional way. For men there is a whole symbolism in the way of dressing. On this island both men and women weave. When they are going to have a child, the men weave a brown and red chullo (hat). Children wear it until they are 8 years old and learn to knit their own hat, which is the bachelor’s red and white chullo. When they are older and have a formal girlfriend, the girl will live together for 3 to 5 years before getting married. During this period they cut the pompom of the chullo so that it is known that although they are single they are not completely free. When they marry, they do so for two rites. One traditional with the shaman and another Catholic in the church. The party lasts a week and there are no invitations, anyone who wants can go to the party – Tours Puno.

They have to slaughter several dozen lambs to feed the entire troop during the holiday week. As soon as they get married they change the chullo for one all red with blue stripes. They also wear a red sash that their wife has woven for them. And attached to the sash they carry a bag called a chuspa where they carry coca leaves that they exchange as a greeting (they do not shake hands). The guide told us how the chullo comes from the traditional hats of Galicia. He explained the island was a prison in colonial times and there were many Galicians. For women there is also a dress code. The single women wear brightly colored skirts and a pink shirt, they put very large colored pompoms in their braids, while the married women wear darker colors. The most enjoyable thing made me very funny was to see the men in the parade ground with their crochets and knitting needles. Then we go down another part towards the coast by 540 stairs. The ship that took us back to Puno was waiting for us in this other port. The trip lasted 2h40 and the children went to the deck of the ship to play. I did not know very well what the game was going on but I could hear them running and throwing themselves on the ground. Jorge and I fell asleep? Puno.

Normally we thought we would stay in Puno and the next day take a bus to Copacabana in Bolivia. Seeing the plan of Puno we decided to go directly when leaving the boat. As the border closes at 6 in the afternoon in Peru, we hired a private transport for the Peru – Bolivia trip. We got on at 4:45 a.m. and he told us it would take 2:40, but let’s not worry that we were going to arrive. I did not get the calculations, but we trusted the driver. The journey was uneventful. We passed a very strange hotel in the middle of nowhere. The driver told us it was a hotel for esoteric tourists. Quite a few come and there are specialized agencies. What Jorge said, here the mystical-cosmic theme works a lot. Finally we arrive at the border 15 minutes before the Peru – Bolivia closing. In the Peruvian part there was no problem. The driver accompanied us to the Bolivian side to store our suitcases and find us a taxi (it seems that there is no international agreement to allow tourist services to pass between borders). When we thought, everything was solved and we were going on a trip, the driver tells us they have taken his ID and they do not let him go on the trip, they accuse him of being a guide? and to provide their services in another country without permission Bolivia – Peru. He asks Jorge to accompany him to speak with the Bolivian police. I keep the suitcases and another Bolivian policeman comes to ask me. I did not see him very savvy or very upright. He accused me, he was hiding something from him and he was not telling the whole truth to the Bolivian policeman. Jorge, who was told that this was not going with us and they voted to leave and leave. The policeman went inside saying to the poor driver, and don’t you come with Peruvian lawyers? Anyway, we couldn’t do more and we took the taxi that the criminal had looked for us? and we go on a trip.

Later we find out there are quite a few problems between the two countries (Peru and Bolivia) and people end up paying for their problems where it has nothing to do with it. They told us he would be stopped and they would detain him for a couple of hours and then they would let him return to his house in Puno.

Upon entering Bolivia we notice where we have changed from Peru to Bolivia. From the border to Copacabana there are 8 kilometers and it took us half an hour. Apparently they are repairing the roads and we went on dirt tracks full of potholes. There is no public lighting and the houses were dark. The taxi reeked of animals. Luckily there were many cars on the road because otherwise the scene seemed like an express kidnapping. The truth is the entry into Bolivia was quite unpleasant due to the incident with the driver on the trip. But when we got to the hotel, everything changed. It is a beautiful hotel, recently refurbished, overlooking the lake. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. We took a shower and went to dinner. Goodbye Peru, welcome to Bolivia.
