Tours Maras – Moray – Salineras 9am – 3pm
Tours Maras Moray Salineras 9am – 3pm in the city of Cusco – Peru. The tour starts from 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.
Trips to Maras: Colonial town has a church built in adobes. Inside there are still paintings from the Cusco school. Picturesque town 53 km (1 h) NW of Cusco by paved road (9 km from Urubamba by carriage trail via Tarabamba and Pichingoto). It was the residence of the descendants of the Incas from Hurin Cusco. In colonial times, it became the first salt-producing center in the southern highlands, which is why it has a good church and several large houses whose facades display shields of nobility. Some of its colonial houses keep interesting secrets. One of them houses the Argandoña family, dedicated to the art of headgear. Another, that of Jesusa Lucana, is known throughout the area for the quality of its chicha de jora. Near Maras (Peasant Community of Pichingoto) the salt mines (locally called “salineras”) are listed, exploited from pre-Hispanic times to the present day. Kicking is highly recommended for photography lovers. U11 affirmed trail (ideal for trekking and mountain biking) connects the salt mines with the towns of Tarabamba and Pichingo! or, a few kilometers from Ollantaytambo on the sacred valley of Urubamba.
Trips to Moray: unique archaeological group are terraces or agricultural platforms with their irrigation channels prototype greenhouse or experimental station. Located 9 km W from the town of Maras by affirmed road, and approximately 62 km north of the city of Cusco, this archaeological site is perhaps one of the most enigmatic of pre-Hispanic Cusco. Composed of a system of concentric agricultural platforms or terraces that reach a depth of 150 m, it has retaining walls connected by a large irrigation system. Its name would be derived from the Quechua voices muyu and uray, which mean ’round’ and ‘downwards’, respectively. It is thought that the place was a great agricultural laboratory in which the Incas managed to create diverse microclimates to promote varieties of crops. Both for its archaeological interest and for the beauty of the landscapes, this is a highly recommended excursion. The access route to Moray is somewhat complicated and is not always in good condition (especially after the rains), so we suggest contacting a guide in Maras or asking for information during the tour.
Trips to Salineras: Or salt mines formed by 300 wells during the drought are filled with salty water that emanates from a natural spring every 3 days, as the water evaporates, salt crystals form.

HIKING TOUR MARAS / MORAY / SALT MINES:
First we visit Moray, a site located on a high plateau consisting of unusual but interesting Inca ruins: several huge circular terraced depressions, the largest of which is approximately 30 m ( 98 feet) deep. The purpose of these depressions is uncertain, but the difference in temperature between the top and bottom caused by this type of construction and its sophisticated irrigation system indicates that Moray was perhaps used by the Incas for conducting agricultural experiments.
We continue our journey to the charming little town of Maras with its eclectic mix of building styles dating from the pre-Columbian, colonial and republican times. The city is known for its attached salt evaporation ponds, called “Las Salineras”. Salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating salty water from a local underground stream since pre-Inca times. The effect of sunlight reflecting off the pond maze is quite impressive.
The short road between Moray and Maras is idyllically beautiful. You’ll get incredible views of the snow-capped peaks during the easy 2-hour hike on flat terrain or downhill. If you don’t want to walk, you can jump in the van for this part of the tour, too.
The Incas and astronomy through the sacred valley – Maras Moray Salineras
As we have commented previously, the Inca Empire can be considered, by geographical extension, the most representative empire in South America. It was also one of the pre-Columbian towns that devoted the most time to the study of the sky – Seven Colors Mountain Tours.
The southern hemisphere sky is amazing and beautiful. The splendor of the Milky Way and its two satellite galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds – Tour to Machu Picchu One Day, make the sky in the southern hemisphere a great spectacle. The ancient inhabitants of the Inca Empire must have thought the same thing, that like the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean (Greeks, Egyptians, Romans …) they saw in those bright points in the sky, sets of stars that they could group and identify as “constellations” . For example, the Milky Way was for them the great Rio Mayu, so bright that its dark areas stood out clearly on the adjacent areas populated with stars – Tour to Machu Picchu by Car 1 day.
For example the “sack of coal”, an especially dark region very close to the prodigious Chakana, the Southern Cross, was known as Yutu, the Partridge, a name that also received another similar region in Sagittarius – Sacred Valley tours With Machu Picchu 2 days. The region of dark clouds between Sagittarius and Centaur was, and still is, the Celestial Flame whose eyes shine in the brilliant Alpha and Beta of the Centaur. Hanp’ata, the Sapo and Machacuay, the Serpent – maras moray salineras, occupy the areas of the Milky Way near the Navío Argos. But two of the most important groups were called as Collca, el Almacén – tours sacred valley of the Incas 1 day. One of them, the least important, formed by the stars of the scorpion sting, and the other, infinitely more important was the Inca name of the Pleiades, since Collca was and is, the central reference of the calendar of the Peruvian highlands, and in its Winter and summer double facet was one of the most important cosmological references of the Empire of the Four Parts, the Tahuantinsuyu – tours to machu picchu 1 day.
Astronomy deserved special attention because it was related to agricultural work and its division was marked by a special festival. They patiently observed the Sun and determined the solstices and equinoxes. For this purpose they were able to use various mechanisms, such as the ceque system and perhaps also the so-called Intihuatanas, which were common in several cities of the Empire – Inca Jungle tours to Machu Piccho 4 days and 3 nights.
Precisely in Cusco, some researchers have found documents from the Spanish colonizers that describe the Inca Temple of the Sun – tours maras moray salineras 1 day, from which forty-one axes radiated called ceques, whose layout implied topographic or astronomical alignments, which defined in the valley a total of about 328 huacas, or sacred places, that fulfilled ritual and political functions – tours sacred valley machu piccho connection 2 days and 1 night.
Among them were the so-called sucancas, which determined the sunrise and sunset points at the June and December solstices. A special case was the huaca Quincalla – Peru tours 5 days , the sunrise and sunset on the day of its zenith passage or the positions of sunrise and sunset of the Pleiades, among others. The departure of the Pleiades was especially significant around 1500 since the heliacal sunrise (first appearance of a star on the eastern horizon after its period of invisibility), on May 13 or 14, was used as a calendar reference – amazing cusco tours machu picchu 4 days and 3 nights.
We can highlight some terms that refer to elements, buildings or places of interest, which are found in various places of the ancient Inca Empire, such as:
Tour Quipus: System of knotted ropes that served for the administration of the Empire, but that were also apparently used for keep astronomical accounts – maras moray salineras, either for calendrical or predictive purposes – trip to machupicchu 1 day by car.
Intihuatanas Tour: From Quechua: inti watana, “(place) where the Sun is tied”. They are monolithic sculptures carved in stone, of variable dimensions but around 1 to 2 meters high and 2 meters in diameter – maras moray salineras. Its standard form starts from a base with different levels and, in some of them, a cubic-looking projection rises in the upper part where each of its faces suggests one of the main geographical directions: north, east, south and west. It seems that they were almost ubiquitous elements in the Inca cult centers and, in general, it is thought that one of their purposes was the determination of the dates of the zenith passage of the Sun – tour machupicchu by car 3 days and 2 nights.
Tour Huacas: According to pre-Columbian tradition, the huacas were elements that had their own personality (a construction, a mountain, a sculpture, etc. maras moray salineras) and are part of the local pantheons of the Inca and pre-Inca cultures of ancient Peru, along with the other “major” Andean deities, such as Wiracocha or Pachacamac. Huacas can be witnessed by the large number of them that are scattered throughout the territory of Tahuantinsuyo – Sacred Valley. They were so important that, in some cases, they are still venerated today – Machupicchu tour by bus 3 days with Huayna Picchu mountain 3 days and 2 nights.
As a place of worship, the huacas are also famous for being places where offerings were deposited. For this reason they were victims of systematic looting and destruction during the first years of the conquest of Peru (16th century maras moray salineras), both for their fame of containing treasures, and for being the center of local religiosity in the provinces that made up the Tahuannisuyo.
Temples of the Sun Tour: Inti, the Sun god, was a divinity highly revered by the ancient Incas, hence that in several cities of the old empire (Cusco, Vilcashuamán, Pisac or Ollantaytambo, among other maras moray salineras) a sanctuary was erected in his honor. The Quechuas, the dominant people in the Inca Empire, had Inti in the first rung of the celestial ladder. Thus, Temples of the Sun were founded in almost all the places of the Inca Empire where the power of the Inca was manifested – sacred valley 1 day, the most important being that of Cusco, called Coricancha. Inti was married to his sister, the Moon, with whom he shared equal rank in the heavenly court. The Moon was known under the name of Mama Quilla – tour ticket to machupicchu 1 day by train.
