Itinerary of the Puno Tours:

Hiram Bingham was a young history professor at Yale University when he decided to travel to Peru in search of the legendary “last refuge of the Incas.” He knew from historical documents that Manco Inca, one of the last Inca emperors, built a city in a remote location in the Vilcabamba region, in an attempt to escape Spanish rule. He had heard of the remains of a settlement high on the eastern slopes of the Andes called “Machu Picchu”, but, to his knowledge, no European or American had ever seen the Machu Picchu site. He was not mentioned by the first Spanish observers on Machu Picchu.

Bingham set out on a trip to Peru in 1911 with a small group of Americans and Peruvians to explore the Urubamba River Valley (Sacred Valley of the Incas), where he believed the last refuge of the Incas could be located. He got Melchor Arteaga, a local resident, to take him to some ruins, which they put on top of a rocky ridge. The Urubamba River flows around three sides of the mountain more than 1,500 feet below. Bingham was surprised when, after a two-hour hard climb up a steep mountain path, he came across “a jungle-covered maze of small and large walls, the ruins of buildings made of white granite blocks, lo more carefully cut and well fitted together without cement “.
