The renowned Lake Titicaca located in the Puno province is one of the most beautiful and important natural heritage of humanity. Located at an altitude of 3810 masl, this lake is the highest and navigable lake in the world, as well as having an importance for Peru since ancient times, because the legends tell that Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, children of the Sun God, were born from the waters of the Titicaca to later found the powerful Inca empire.
Tour Titicaca Lake in Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca is the famous island of the Uros, a group of handmade islands, where you can live with the natives, go sailing and fishing.
The ancient Inca legend tells that at the beginning of time, God Wiracocha left Lake Titicaca and created the sun, the earth and man. To the east of the Capachica peninsula and about 40 km from the city of Puno, the island of Amantaní rises from the deep blue waters of Titicaca. From a distance you can glimpse the ancient andénes, built in pre-Columbian times. On the island you can admire sacred sites of the Pukara and Lupaka pre-Inca cultures and the Inca culture.
Until the mid-twentieth century the island was a land of haciendas. At last, after several uprisings, the people of Amantane managed to expel the landowners and acquire the land. Currently around 4000 people live on the island. They are mostly peasants, who speak their native Quechua and Castilian languages. Like their ancestors, they live in adobe houses (most of them without electricity) and are dedicated to raising sheep and farming. In the innumerable stands cultivate potatoes, oca, barley and “the cereal of the Incas”: quinoa
