Basic Cusco Tours Information:
Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire, which is why the city is completely covered in Inca architecture designed for religious, administrative, military and domestic purposes. With the Conquest and the Colony, the Spanish built a new city on what was found.
Today we will visit the Koricancha, which was the most important Inca temple because it was dedicated to the cult of the Sun. The Spanish built a Dominican church and convent over this temple. Today we will also visit the recently inaugurated Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, in the premises of a wonderful colonial house. In the afternoon we will leave for the Inca complex of Tipón, a splendid testimony of this culture dedicated to the cult of water; then we will stop in the town of Huasao a way to the south of the city Tours Cusco Basico, an ancient settlement of healers and shamans.
Tourist Attractions within the city of Cusco – Daily Tour:
Main Square of Cusco:
Called Huacaypata or ‘plaza del guerrero’ in Inca times, it was the scene of various key events in the history of Cusco in Peru. Every year the spectacular Inti Raymi or festival of the Sun was celebrated there; There, Pizarro also proclaimed the conquest and invasion of Cusco and Túpac Amaru I, leader of the indigenous resistance in Cusco, was killed (1571). With the arrival of the Spanish, the square was surrounded by a beautiful stone arcade, the same one that embellishes it to this day. It is also home to the Cathedral and the church of La Compañía.
Cathedral Church of Cusco:
The Cathedral of Cusco was built between 1560 and 1664 with large blocks of red granite extracted from the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, it is one of the most impressive buildings in the city. Its Renaissance-style façade contrasts with the Baroque and Plateresque of its lavish interiors. In addition, it has one of the most important goldsmith samples of colonial art, finely carved wooden altars and a beautiful collection of canvases from the refined Cusco School. At its sides there are two small auxiliary chapels; one of them, the Iglesia del Triunfo, was actually the first cathedral in Cusco, erected in 1539 over the palace of the Inca Wiracocha.
Church of La Compañía – Day Tour Cusco:
Considered one of the best exponents of the colonial baroque in America, its construction, begun by the Jesuits in 1576, was carried out on the Amarucancha or palace of the Inca Huayna Cápac. Its spectacular carved stone façade and its main altar, profusely carved in cedar and covered in gold leaf, built
above an underground chapel. The church also has an extensive collection of sculptures and paintings, made by the most renowned artists of the Cusco School. On its sides stand the chapel of Lourdes and the old oratory of San Ignacio de Loyola.
Convent and Church of La Merced – Day Tour Cusco:
Built in the 16th century and rebuilt repeatedly as a result of the earthquakes that hit the city of Cusco, it has one of the most beautiful Baroque-Renaissance cloisters in Peru, decorated by a beautiful Plateresque-style choir stalls, numerous colonial carvings and paintings and a piece of goldwork that stands out for its uniqueness: a 1.3m high and 22kg gold and precious stone monstrance topped by a large pearl in the shape of mermaid, considered the second largest in the world.
Koricancha and Santo Domingo Convent – Day Tour Cusco:
The convent was built on the spectacular Koricancha or “site of gold”, the most important temple dedicated to the cult of the Sun, whose walls were covered with sheets of gold. This convent was built using polished stone structures – the most finely worked in Cusco – from the Inca sanctuary as a base. Its façade is an excellent example of the Renaissance and its only tower, in the Baroque style, stands out against the tiled roofs of the city. Like the two aforementioned temples, it has an important collection of canvases from the Cusco School.
Barrio de San Blas – Cusco Day Tours:
Also known as the craftsmen’s quarter, it is one of the most picturesque places in the city. Its narrow and steep streets zigzag between old houses built with Inca stone walls and peaceful squares. Its church, built in 1563, is the oldest parish in Cusco, and has a spectacular pulpit, considered the highest expression of wood carving from the colonial period. In addition, the neighborhood, which has one of the most beautiful views of the city, brings together the workshops and shops of the most renowned Cusco artisans, such as Hilario Mendívil and Edilberto Mérida, Santiago Rojas and Maximiliana Palomino.
Calle Hatun Rumiyoc – Day Tours Cusco:
Perhaps the best known street in the city of Cusco. In one of its carved stone walls (currently belonging to the Archbishop’s Palace) is the famous stone of the twelve angles, the same that was part of the ancient Inca Roca palace. This street, charged with magnetism, offers excellent access to the picturesque artisan neighborhood of San Blas.
